This version of the Lord’s Prayer was requested in 2025 by elders at Holy Rosary Church in Grand Portage as they worked to integrate Ojibwe back into the mass. When the church first celebrated mass, and served as a community classroom, only Ojibwe and French were used. As the politics of the region changed, English became more common and was mandated in many places. It is a familiar prayer asking for only what is needed and the peace of forgiveness, for oneself and for others.

Although we all have different relationships to Gichi-manidoo, we can possibly agree on what is written in Corinthians 1:10 and 26: “However many the languages used in the world, all of them use sound . . Let all things be done in a way that will build up the community.”

Aanawi ganawenimishinaam bwaa-maji-izhiwebiziyaang
But deliver us from evil
