hymn “On this Day, O Beautiful Mother” was composed by Louis Lambillotte who lived from 1796 to 1855. It is often sung at weddings and during the month of May, which is dedicated to Mary. Lamillotte is known for his work with Gregorian chant which is a form of ceremonial recitation dating back to the 3rd century. Much like early Ojibwe songs, chanting was used to aid people in remembering and presenting texts or stories.

On a sentimental note, this recording was made by Jim Spry and Margaret Noodin for the celebration of the marriage of Christian and Jackiemae Deschampe on October 18, 2024. The song was also sung by Margaret’s grandmother, Margaret Hill O’Donnell at weddings in the 1940s and 1950s.

His father came from Gaa-waabaabiganikaag (White Earth) to Gichi-Onigaming to work for the CCC, met Jim’s mother, and stayed. He is known along the north shore as a talented singer and guitar-player and made these recordings with Margaret Noodin in 2024 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, the Elders Nutrition Program, or at homes in Gichi-Onigaming.
In the Garden is often considered an American country music standard and was written in 1912 by C. Austin Miles. Translated into Ojibwe, the lyrics teach some important phrases about depending on others and appreciating the beauty around us. For instance, the words “wiijibimosem” (to walk with another) reminds us to share life’s burdens; and the word “dibendaagozi” (to belong) reminds us part of being is belonging.

Based on the Swedish hymn “O Store Gud,” written by Carl Boberg in 1885, the most common English version, which is used here, was written by the British Baptist, Stuart K. Hine after he learned a Russian of the song version in 1931 while visiting the Ukranian region of the Carpathian mountains.

The fascinating story of how the song has spread across continents, often despite wars and political differences, is a testament to the universal emotion of awe and wonder, which in Ojibwe can take many forms: maamakaadendaagwad (something that is amazing or miraculous), maamakaadendaagozi (someone, or an animate part of the universe is amazing), maamakaadendan (to be amazed by something) or maamakaadenim (to be amazed by someone). . . just to name a few.

The words to this song, written by Wellesley College professor, Katharine Lee Bates, first appeared as a poem in a Congregationalist publication in 1895. By 1900 there were over 70 musical versions of the poem, but it was when a Baptist preacher, Clarence Barbour, paired it with music by Episcopal choirmaster, Samuel Ward, that the song was first heard as we sing it now.

The anthem continues to be one that unifies and reaches across differences and has been recorded by hundreds of artists including: Bing Crosby, Charlie Rich, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin, Vince Gill, Brenda Lee, Kenny Rogers, Barbara Streisand, Lyle Lovitt, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey and many others.

The song was first performed for an audience on the 4th of July in 1831 at a children’s concert in Boston. The melody is based on the British national anthem, “God Save the Queen” but has been given words that reflect 19th century views of immigration, settlement and Indigenous pride. The song was considered the unofficial national anthem until 1931. Although the history of America is complicated and opinions on how to go forward are often divided, we can all appreciate the beauty of our country and reflect on ways to improve access to freedom and equality for all. This song is one the veterans of Gichi-Onigaming / Grand Portage enjoy singing along with on special occasions.

Jim Spry & Margaret Noodin. Photo by Janis Fairbanks.

This translation is partially based on one first published in 1910 in the Ojibwe Hymnal compiled by Rev. Edward Coley Kah-O-Sed, who was born on Walpole Island First Nation, Bkejwanong Territory, Ontario, Canada, in 1870, where there was a strong Anglican tradition at the time. He went to Miskwaagamiiwi Zaaga’iganing Red Lake Nation in Minnesota to work as an interpreter in 1894 and was ordained as an Episcopal priest in 1907 by James Dow Morrison, bishop of Duluth.

A version of this song has been used in many Ojibwe communities with Anglican, Catholic, Episcopal and Midewin traditions by the Ojibwe Hymn Singers. In the fall of 2024, their services were still regularly being requested via a Facebook page where they say the main function of their ministry “is to help families and friends that have had a death to go through the grieving process.”

These songs remain a lovely way to learn Ojibwemowin with examples of language use that all students can enjoy. For example, in this song, ”giiwoshkaw”, meaning “to follow someone back” appears as the participle “gaawoshkawang” inviting all of us to follow.
